“You know it’s time to call Encharter Insurance when…” – MA Home Insurance Edition

  1. You are refinancing your mortgage: Refinancing your mortgage can definitely be financially advantageous but, it’s important to let your Insurance Agent know so that they can make the appropriate changes to your Home Insurance policy.
  2. You are moving and/or selling your home: In addition to needing the correct address on your account, you need the right coverage! When you move, the coverage will change depending upon your new address and you will need to get a new home insurance policy. Also, if you are selling your house, you will need to let your Insurance Agent know the closing date on your home and if your property will be vacant while your house is in the market so that your coverage can be adjusted accordingly.
  3. You get an expensive piece of jewelry or an irreplaceable piece of art: Scheduling high-value items is the best way to make sure that they are protected by your Home Insurance policy. Getting a Jewelry Floater or Fine Arts Insurance is the most specific you can get when it comes to protecting your invaluable valuables.
  4. You get a new pet: Certain pets can affect your Home Insurance coverage and may even lead to your Insurance Company dropping your coverage. Since various types of dogs are prone to more aggressive behavior and animals like snakes and ferrets can prove to be risky additions to your home – letting your agent know will help you to make adjustments to your coverage as needed to avoid cancellation, any lapses or gaps in coverage and any being blind-sided with a potential issue.
  5. You get an alarm installed at your house: Did you know that you may be eligible for discounts that are associated with having a security alarm installed? Having an alarm gives your home more protection and Insurance Companies like to see that. Sending in a certificate as proof of the installation is the first step.
  6. You get a trampoline or pool: Trampolines and pools both increase the risk of an accident happening at your home and therefore increase your liability so, it is critical that certain safety measures are taken. Furthermore, there are some companies that will not cover that increase in risk (and likelihood of a claim being filed) for your Massachusetts Home Insurance – it’s very good idea to let your insurance agent know of such a change because if an accident does occur, it may not be covered.
  7. You build an addition or garage: Your Homeowners Policy is designed to cover your home the way that it was when you got the policy. Unfortunately, your Insurance Agent is not magically notified when you add to that. Making the appropriate changes to the Home Insurance policy is very important – if you’re already covered, then at least you called to double-check.
  8. Hurricane Season is on its way: Hurricane Season 2011 starts June 1st (next week) and lasts until November 30th and it’s predicted to be pretty bad. As soon as a storm is named, coverage cannot be bound – aka. No new policies or changes to existing policies can be made. Don’t wait until the last minute or you may be left uncovered!
