A Sobering Reminder

Our hearts go out to all the friends and family of 32-year-old Jennifer Joseph, who died crossing a street in Barnstable, MA earlier this week. Jennifer’s untimely death is made all the more devastating by the fact that she was 7 months pregnant.

According to a news report by WWLP News, Barstable police have reason to believe that Jennifer may have been distracted by her cell-phone when she stepped out into the street, and are currently investigating the evidence.

While the Massachusetts legislature did pass a law banning texting while driving earlier this year, there is no law concerning the use of cell-phones by pedestrians near public roadways. Nevertheless, it is important to recognize that remaining aware of your surroundings – especially in crowded or congested areas – is a matter of safety and should not be compromised by using distracting devices such as cell-phones and other hand-held electronics. “Look both ways” is not merely a phrase used by elementary school teachers lecturing children, but an important instruction for everyone.

Unfortunately, accidents happen, and it is important to be protected.
