I’m sure I wasn’t the only one who spent the better part of yesterday evening pacing around their house watching the news, and waiting for the Bruins to start, with their stomach tied in knots. Tornadoes had hit Westfield, Springfield, West Springfield, and Sturbridge and weren’t done yet. Storm cells along Route 2 and the Pike – it seemed like they were headed straight for Boston (and I don’t even have a basement)!
In addition to yesterday’s damaging storms, and the storms that have been happening all over the country for that matter, yesterday was also the start of the 2011 Atlantic hurricane season. This means a chance for even more high-winds, torrential rain and hail to be had from now until November.
So, the question is, are you prepared?? Being underinsured, or even uninsured like many of the people in Joplin, MO affected by the tornadoes, can be very difficult to deal with after such a traumatic event. While some coverages on your existing Massachusetts Home Insurance, like wind and hail, are important to familiarize yourself with, others need their own endorsement or policy, like Earthquake Insurance and Flood Insurance, respectively. Unfortunately, it seems as though it isn’t until a natural disaster has already happened that people start talking about insurance coverage (remember the tsunami?!). This is especially true in areas where tornadoes and earthquakes are not as common, i.e. the Northeast, making it more difficult to remember to be prepared for “anything and everything”.
I have my fingers crossed that the next storms that may come our way will be much milder but, I can guarantee that that won’t keep me protected. So, on a bright sunny day, like today, it’s a good idea to take a minute to review your Massachusetts Insurance policies and make sure that you are not underinsured!
