Before the Storm Hits…

We’ve already had two classic New England-style snow storms this winter and there are bound to be at least a few more headed our way in the next few months. Whether you’ll be looking forward to some additional flurries and the great ski-conditions they will bring or you are dreading more snow and the time that you’ll have to spend shoveling with numb fingers and toes, we want to give you some pointers to make preparing and bearing the snow a little easier.

According to FEMA:

  • You should add rock salt, sand, snow shovels and brushes to your disaster supplies kit. Make sure that these items are easily accessible and fully stocked/in good-condition.
  • Get your home ready for the storm by:
    • Have sufficient heating supplies and resources for sustaining your family in case you are stuck at home for a while. Keep in mind that regular fuel resources may be cut off during a storm.
    • Winterize your home and any other structure on your property that can provide shelter. It’s best if this is done before the impending storm is hours away but, anything you can do is helpful.
    • Insulate pipes and turn off water valves.
    • Keep fire extinguishers handy
    • Have a professional check the stability of your roof and make necessary repairs before the snow starts to fall, at times wet snow and freezing rain can and extreme stress to the structural frame of your home.
    • Have a plan in place to help neighbors, employees and disabled or elderly friends should they need it.
    • Dress appropriately
      • Layer up
      • Wear mittens and a hat
      • Cover your mouth with a turtle or scarf
