Friend. Sibling. Spouse. Co-worker. Consumer. Commuter. We all wear many different hats throughout the day and it can sometimes be overwhelming, I know I act differently at work than at home with my roommates or in the classroom. Managing the different roles you have in life can be stressful and at times overwhelming.
However, commuters in Boston have found a friendship that is well defined and straight forward. Getting on the commuter rail for a 45 minute ride to the city lets six strangers interact and have company during the ride. Their friendship is limited to the MBTA stop and train, but allows for some social interaction and as one commuter puts it, “it just brightens our day.”
With defined boundaries (they don’t feel the need to invite each other over for dinner or help each other move), they have one hat they can wear and control. They commute daily so do not need to worry about traffic or Massachusetts car insurance, and they rarely have to juggle multiple aspects of their lives at one time on the ride.
Although we like to keep ourselves busy and social, it is nice to have some control and consistency. Developing a routine like these six commuters have can help alleviate some stress. We have routines to provide stability to life. Wake up at the same time every day. Go food shopping every Monday. Get the car checked every 3,000 miles. And, of course, reviewing your MA insurance policies every year.
We might fear getting into a “rut”, but with the chaotic lives we all live nowadays, consistency isn’t a bad thing. Whether you are a commuter with a few commuting friends or driving east on the Mass Pike with your MA car insurance in your glovebox, hopefully you have your routine down and can have some semblance of control over it.
