Driving while Texting and without Auto Insurance, the Wrong Road to Take

By living in today’s technological era, our society has become almost completely dependent on technology. For the most part technology has really raised the standard of living across the globe. However, in a few cases certain innovations people have become dependent upon have led them on a path to danger. The focus of society’s recent worries about technology has been text messaging. Text messaging exploded in the early 2000’s; text messaging is now the most widely used mobile data service. According to a recent survey, approximately 2.4 billion people use text messaging. No one could have foreseen that this technological phenomenon could lead to as many deaths and injuries when mixed with driving.

This issue has become such a danger that many states have outlawed texting and driving, and put into effect stiff penalties for committing this act. Texting and driving has become a huge concern to legal officials, right on pace with drinking and driving. A shocking fact in study done by AAA found, “In 2007…21% of fatal car crashes involving teens between the ages of 16 and 19 were the result of cell phone usage”. Also 80% of girls and 52% of boys have admitted to texting while driving.

One particular case that has reached on to the hearts of many on this issue is the case of a local Texas teen named Alex Brown that died in November of 2009 due to texting and driving. Her family and their strong will to educate the local youths about the dangers of texting while driving now carry on Alex’s spirit. The family recently appeared on ABC’s Extreme Home Makeover, and came up with a program for people to pledge not to text and drive.
