Spring is here! In other words, you are saved from coping with the cabin fever from which your children have suffered all winter. Now, though, your children can finally run around outside until they simply just tire themselves out. If you’re lucky, they will even fall asleep earlier than usual. But do some of these activities make you uneasy because of the risks they present to your child’s safety? Here are some fun summer games and suggestions for safer play:
My personal favorite is to organize a scavenger hunt. Tell your child(ren) to have their friends come over and play. You can prepare a list of objects the kids need to find (usually a different list for each child is best). You can also do an Alphabet hunt where the kids need to find an object for every letter of the alphabet. Any type of hunt can be fun when played in the backyard, on the playground, etc. Buy little toys at the dollar store for prizes. You will be the world’s coolest parent! Best of all, scavenger hunts are safe as long as there are boundaries set, designating where the children are allowed to search.
Did you ever play red-rover as a child? What about dodgeball? These games can be a blast, but they can also be very dangerous. There are many risks associated with playing these games, such as getting hit in the face with the dodgeball or, while playing red-rover, attempting to break the wall formed by the children’s tight grips and falling backwards instead. If anything severe were to happen to any of your children’s friends, you would very likely be liable. Hospital visits, recovery time, and even surgery, are all reasons for that child’s parents to sue you. Though this may seem extreme, you would be surprised how quickly a friendship can go sour as a result of such accidents.
At Encharter Insurance, we want to make sure your spring is filled with safety and sunshine, rather than debt and distress. First of all, be sure to keep an eye out if there are children playing on your property. Secondly, make sure you have Umbrella Insurance to cover those liabilities that exceed your normal Homeowner’s Insurance policy in the event of a severe accident. The agents at Encharter Insurance will work with you to create a unique and affordable Umbrella Insurance policy; remember a little bit goes a long way when it comes to insurance policies.
