It looks like there might be more snow headed our way this week and if the forecast holds true (dare I wish for a snow day??) there will definitely be kids across Massachusetts grabbing their sleds and running towards the nearest slope they can find.
But, before you let the little ones run free, it’s important to read up on some of the most common (and dangerous) symptoms to look out for. Here are the top 5 tips for staying healthy this winter:
- Sunscreen – even though the sun isn’t as hot, you can still get a sunburn in the winter time!
- Stay Dry – it’s important to keep an eye out for when your child’s clothes become wet from playing in the snow or from sweating. Being exposed to the cold for too long, especially if the damp clothes can cause a chill, can result in hypothermia.
- Flu Shot – talk to your doctor to see whether your child should get a flu shot. In the meantime, it’s especially important at this time of year, when so many viruses and bugs are going around, to wash your hands frequently (remind your kids to do the same), to regularly clean toys and play surfaces and to keep an eye out for any symptoms of cold and flu.
- Bundle up – wearing lots of warm layers, like polypropylene and wool, and covering up as much skin as possible will help to prevent windburn and frostbite that can result from extended exposure to the elements.
- Stretch – when the temperature drops, muscles tend to get tighter and more prone to injury. Before participating in winter sports activities (hockey, ice skating, skiing, etc…), it’s a good idea to have your kids do some light stretching.
Often kids don’t realize how cold they are when they are having fun outside with their friends. It’s important to make sure that they are dressed appropriately and that they come inside often to warm up with some hot chocolate. This is a great time to quickly dry their snow pants and mittens and to check for symptoms of cold-related health problems under the guise of a warm tasty treat.
With the kids running wild through the neighborhood, it’s important to make sure that you have the appropriate liability coverage on your home to protect you if anything should happen. Call your local Encharter Insurance agent today to see if your liability coverage enough and whether you should consider an MA Umbrella Insurance Policy.
