Massachusetts Renters Insurance for New Grad

I only just graduated from UCONN (Go Huskies!) this past August and I couldn’t wait to enter the real world.  Things fell into place relatively quickly too; I got my first real job, I got a new car, and it was the first time that I felt truly independent…sort of.  I was still living with my parents and as much as I love them and appreciate what they’ve done for me, I still felt that I needed to be on my own.  But I just got my first apartment and I am so excited!  I am in the process of unpacking all my stuff and I love going through it all, finding each kitchen tool, book, or towel its own little niche.  I also appreciate the independence that comes with living on my own.  I even like the financial independence, though I am sure that will wear off sooner rather than later.

Now that I have my independence and a place to call my own, I am pretty sure that I would be devastated if something were to happen to the building or my things inside; devastated at the loss, yes, but even more so with the prospect of having to come up with the money to replace everything.  I have some expensive things that would be very costly to replace, not to mention the family heirlooms that were passed down to me that are irreplaceable and invaluable to my family.

That’s when I started to think about renters insurance and how paying the yearly premium for that kind of peace of mind is way cheaper than replacing most of the things I own, even once, after a tragedy.

If you’re in the same boat as I am, don’t make the mistake of thinking that your landlord’s insurance has you covered—it may only cover damage to the building and not any damage to the contents.
