Everybody has heard of them. If you’ve experienced their workings personally, you may even think of yourself as indebted to them. They are the Jaws of Life. The most coveted of all emergency response equipment when disaster strikes. But how does this mysterious, theatrically romantic sounding piece of equipment save so many lives, and why must we always remember to thank the powers that be for sending this little piece of technological magic our way.
The tool was first initially developed in 1972 by Hurst Performance as an answer to the dangers associated with firefighters using saws to cut mangled vehicles apart. Using saws to rescue trapped motorists created sparks, which was highly risky considering the amount of gas and other fluids that often leak out of their tanks after a crash.
The Jaws are actually not one tool, but three. All three components are powered by powerful hydraulics, and none rely on fast spinning blades or any other technology that can prove to be hazardous in automobilist rescue situations.
The first tool is referred to as a spreader. And it does just that. It is inserted into an area that rescue workers need expanded, and then activated using its complex power system. Imagine a closed pair of scissors stabbed into a piece of paper and then opened. The spreader essentially does this to the sides of a vehicle, and because of its complicated hydraulic powered system, it does so with ease.
The cutter is the second tool, and is essentially the opposite of the above. Using the same technology to maximize power, the cutter is razor sharp and is can be used to cut through any component of a vehicle. Lastly, the ram can be used to break straight through any surface that may be separating rescue workers from a trapped victim.
These tools together allow firefighters and other rescue workers to tare apart vehicles and get to accident victims within minutes. In life threatening situations, this speed can make all the difference.
Although saving the driver and passengers after an accident is incredibly important, it is important to remember that vehicle protection is necessary as well. Fortunately, most accidents do not require the presence of the Jaws of Life but, it is necessary in MA to have the appropriate MA Auto Insurance to soften the financial burden associated with accidents.
