Oil Home Heating Laws In Massachusetts Revised

Alright…we’ve been hearing about this for a while now, and the time has finally come.  Starting tomorrow, July 1st, new regulations about oil home heating systems in Massachusetts take effect. According to the Massachusetts DEP website, these revisions state requirements for:

  • the installation of either an oil safety valve or an oil supply line with protective sleeve on systems that do not currently have these devices; and
  • insurance companies that write homeowner policies to offer coverage for leaks from heating systems that use oil.

Those homeowners with oil home heating systems who are exempt if:

  • the oil burner is located above the oil storage tank and the entire oil supply line is connected to and about the top of the tank OR
  • an oil safety valve or oil supply line with protective sleeve was installed on or after January 1, 1990, AND
  • those changes are in compliance with the oil burning equipment regulations; a copy of the oil burner permit from the local fire department may be used to demonstrated compliance.

Be sure to visit the Massachusetts DEP website for more information about how you may need to comply with these new regulations. And also, be sure to talk to your Encharter Insurance agent about reviewing your Massachusetts Homeowner’s Insurance policy.
