Owning a Business 101: Staying Informed on Employment Regulations

As a business owner in Massachusetts, it can be difficult to keep track of the latest laws and regulations concerning the employment you provide to your employees.  However, like securing the best possible MA Business Insurance for your business in MA, it is something that you absolutely need to do. It doesn’t make things easier that you must be aware of and comply with both federal and state laws. We know you are very busy so, to try and help you out, here are some of the latest updates about child labor regulations found in Business West. With regards to regulations for minors of 14 and 15 years of age, these youth will now be allowed to work in industries including “advertising, banking, cargo services, and information technology” in addition to the already permitted food service and gasoline industries.

Furthermore, various new responsibilities required in these industries will now be permitted. For example, they will be allowed to “enter freezers…load and unload light items…be permitted to work inside and outside” businesses where power-driven machinery is used. Not to mention that, provided a youth of 15 yrs is certified by an organization such as the American Red Cross, they will be allowed to be employed as a lifeguard or swim instructor.

These laws are a significant change from the previous regulations and it’s important to stay up to date. Additionally, it is important to refresh yourself with the laws that are already in place, by both Massachusetts Department of Labor and Federal Department of Labor.
