Every year on the third Monday in April (this year, April 19, 2010) the state of Massachusetts is given the chance to take a break from the normal hustle and bustle to remember our American roots. Patriots’ Day is a public holiday to honor the first battles of the American Revolutionary War in 1775; the battles of Lexington and Concord. Throughout Lexington, MA and the greater Boston area, re-enactments, parades and ceremonies memorialize the soldiers who fought for our nation’s independence. Now through Saturday, April 24th, take advantage of the opportunity to celebrate the patriotism of this great state!
Not a big history buff? You can still celebrate! Patriots’ Day has also come to be known as “Marathon Monday” as a result of the Boston Marathon that is held on this day annually as well. And, while it’s a little late to train and qualify to participate if you haven’t already, it’s never too late to stop along the route to cheer on these hardcore marathoners, many from around the world!
And lastly, let’s not forget that the Red Sox have been playing their Patriots’ Day game(s) at home in Fenway Park for almost 50 years now! So, while enjoying your three-day weekend off from work and/or school, you should try to find time to root on the Sox as they play Tampa Bay this Monday at 11:05, even if you can’t make it to the field. Whatever it is that you decide to do this weekend, be sure to enjoy yourself while relaxing with friends and family. Stay safe and have a great time!
