When you were younger, did you have a favorite blanket? If you were a boy, perhaps you had some Hot Wheels cars; and if you were a girl, you most likely had a dollhouse. Recently these three play items were added to the Toy Hall of Fame in Rochester, New York. The blanket was inducted for its ability to be both a play thing, as well as an item which sparks imagination in a child. Hot Wheels have been around since 1968, sparking imagination among young boys, and young girls, around the world. Dollhouses were originally known as “baby-houses” in the 16th-century and were used by wealthy European women to show off collections of furnishings.
The puppet, the pogo stick and the Rubik’s Cube were also up for nomination into the hall of fame, but fell short. In order to be inducted, toys must be widely recognized; it must encourage play through learning, discovery or creativity; and it must remain popular over many generations.
Already in the New York’s National Toy Hall of Fame, you can find the bicycle, the Jack-in-the-Box, Mr. Potato Head, Barbie, the kite, and the teddy bear, amongst many others. Plan a trip to bring back your inner child, or share your memories with your children or grandchildren.
