Protect yourself from the Silent Killer (CO)

This winter has been one for the record books, with all the damage that all this season’s snowfall has brought. News reports across New England are warning you about the potential dangers of the snow, and the preventive steps to keep you and your family safe.  While most of the media coverage is focused on roofs collapsing and water damage, another potentially lethal danger is carbon monoxide poison. With all the snow that has been accumulating it is inevitable that snow drifts will form against your house, this can cause a blockage of exhaust vents from appliances in your home

Usually the issue can be caused by a buildup of snow blocking outdoor vents, chimneys, flues, and dryer vents. This can make the carbon monoxide in the exhaust backup and comeback into your home. Carbon monoxide poisoning is very dangerous and often can be lethal.

Here are several tips to help prevent this danger:

  1. Make sure all the appliances that vent to the outside of your home have clear and open exhaust paths.
  2. Make sure your gas lines and meter are cleared off also because by not allowing this equipment to breathe it can cause a carbon buildup in your home. However, be careful when clearing off this equipment, use something gentle such as a household broom to avoid puncturing.
  3. Make sure to walk around your house to insure that you have cleared all the vents, and the snow is at least three feet away from the vent.
  4. Also make sure you and your family are properly covered by your MA Home Insurance and MA Life Insurance policies, should a situation arise.
