The Connecticut River is rising and it’s getting pretty scary for anyone that lives near it or any other body of water. Its spring again and prime-time for some high-waters (and no, not the short pants kind). Unfortunately, all of those snowstorms we had earlier this year, are coming back to get us one more time! This pretty much means that especially if you’ve ever had water in your basement, and even if you haven’t, odds are good that you will this year.
Preparation is key! First, it’s a good idea to make sure that you know what is covered on your Massachusetts Home Insurance policy and if you have MA Flood Insurance, what is covered by that policy as well. Flood water that seeps through basement walls is NOT covered by your Massachusetts Homeowners Insurance (some companies offer endorsements however, that cover certain types of water damage). By calling your insurance agent as soon as possible, you can ready yourself for the next steps that you need to take.
Second, prepare your home by taking some of the following flood preparation steps (recommended by FloodSmart.gov): educate yourself on floods, flood insurance, ways to minimize loss and flooding procedures in your community; safeguard your possessions and try to take inventory to the best degree possible (keep this file somewhere safe and away from your home); prepare your home and property; and, establish emergency procedures that you and your family are comfortable with, including neighbors is also a good idea.
Lastly, keep an eye on local weather forecasts and flood warnings in Massachusetts so that you are as prepared as possible for what Mother Nature may have in store!
