Motorcycles have become a fun American pastime, but virtually everyone is familiar with the potential danger these bikes can bring. Another aspect of many motorcycle accidents is that sometimes it isn’t your fault; it is the other driver who is changing lanes and either was not looking or didn’t see you if you were in their blind spot. Motorcycles can be operated safely with the proper precautions, there is no guarantee that you won’t get hurt but driving safe will help your chances. To give you a quick glimpse of the danger associated with motorcycles, in the 2001 riding season 3,000 deaths were linked back to motorcycle related crashes.
This past Sunday, April 10th the local chapter of “Biker Information Guide” organized a ride to promote awareness for biker safety. The crew had a very particular purpose to ride this year, one more personal than previous years because their president and co-founder was killed last season in a motorcycle accident. No matter how experienced or skilled you feel you may be on your motorcycle, you are not invincible. When you are riding you should become more of a defensive driver than ever, to make yourself aware of any potential dangers.
Here a few quick & easy safety tips from the Motorcycle Safety Foundation:
- ALWAYS wear your helmet and eye protection
- Wear protective clothing that is thick at all times, even when it is hot out because it could save your life!
- Be cautious and leave a good amount of room between you and the car/rider in front of you (not to mention, zipping in and out of lanes and around other cars is very dangerous)
- Be honest with yourself, and drive within your own ability
- Make sure you have the proper MA Motorcycle Insurance (and the best discounts by combining this policy with your MA Car Insurance policy), in case you are ever involved in an accident.
