Some Pool Safety Tips

Summer is almost here and that means that pool season is almost upon us as well.  If you’re a parent, then the plaguing question that you know all too well is, “How do I keep my kids and their friends safe?” Well, here are some tips on pool safety, courtesy of the American Academy of Pediatrics:

  • Never leave your children alone in or near the pool, even for a moment. An adult who knows CPR should actively supervise children at all times.
  • You must put up a fence to separate your house from the pool. This fence will completely separate the pool from the house and play area of the yard.
  • Keep rescue equipment (such as a shepherd’s hook or life preserver) and a telephone by the pool.
  • Do not use air-filled “swimming aids” as a substitute for approved life vests.
  • Remove all toys from the pool after use so children aren’t tempted to reach for them.

Despite the caution you might take, pools still present themselves as big liability risks.  If a neighbor or a neighbor’s child gets injured at your pool, even if they are uninvited, you are liable. Be sure to review your Homeowner’s Insurance Policy with your Encharter Insurance agent. Discuss its liability limits and be sure you will be adequately protected from the losses of a potential lawsuit. It is also a good idea to talk about purchasing a Personal Umbrella Policy for added security.
