Let’s say you pride yourself on being a good driver; you never run a red light or come to a rolling stop at a stop sign, you drive the speed limit and always wear your seatbelt, and you never steer with your knee or forget to use your blinkers. If all of these things are true, then that’s great! You probably are a good driver. It’s important to be alert, aware and adapting to the changing conditions.
But, can you honestly say that you have never texted while driving? Maybe you have never typed out a new message but, you occasionally glance down to read an incoming one. Technically, this still counts. Even though this new bill only applies to texting, Encharter Insurance suggests that GPS users pull over safely (to the shoulder of the road or a well lit parking lot) before typing an address into your GPS unit. Additionally, it is a good idea for Smartphone users to refrain from, or at least limit, the use of your keyboard (Web searching, navigation, music, etc) while driving. If you are a MA resident, you should know that a new bill was just passed, and will come into effect this October, to increase safety while driving.
Primarily, this bill bans texting while driving, the use of mobile devices for drivers under the age of 18 and sets stricter restrictions on older drivers. As a primary offense, if a police officer suspects that you are texting, you can be pulled over on the spot. Additionally, if you are over 75, the new bill will require you to undergo more frequent vision tests (now every five years).
